In some ways, it felt like she was back where she started-- relaxed, carefree, counting the clouds with a wisp of grass between her teeth. The sky was blue, the sun was warm, and for once, Jess had nowhere to be. No calls. No crises. No responsibilities.
Of course, that meant she was unemployed, and technically homeless. Dunno what's so technical about it. Seems pretty plain any way you look at it to me, she thought, rolling over onto her side to give a slow once-over to the little camp she'd set up. Fire pit, dug. Tent stakes, nailed. Helicopter pad, set. All she needed was a camping permit, and hell, if she was the biggest thing the local rangers had to worry about, Hoenn would be even easier to deal with than she'd figured.
It was strangely nostalgic. It had been a long time since she'd been out on her own--really on her own. With some star tournament sweeping the region, it had been a piece of cake to slip in unnoticed among all the chaos of visiting trainers from other League regions. Nobody noticed one little unmarked chopper slip past the radar.
The distant swish of passing cyclists on the main road reminded her she wasn't as alone as she liked to believe and she rolled back over, bumping into the Dodrio snoozing in the shade just behind her. One of the heads raised, giving a warning honk of alarm. "Aw, you're fine," Jess said, thumping it roughly on the back as she sank into its soft feathers. The head made a disgruntled noise before tucking itself back in again.
She closed her eyes, succumbing to the heat and inevitable wave of apathy.
What was the rush? Wasn't like anyone was waiting.
